Louis B. Mayer grew up in the north end of Saint John and began his career in 1907 when he bought a small theatre in Haverhill, Massachusetts. Before long he owned the largest theatre chain in New England. In 1917 he formed a production company and in 1924 merged with Samuel Goldwyn and Marcus Loew to form Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Mayer was also instrumental in the founding of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1927. He passes away in 1957.
